Seasonal Non-Fiction Reading Passages with Comprehension Checks

· ·

I have created many units and freebies, most of which include non-fiction reading passages.  Over the years, one of the most frequently asked questions I have received is about the non-fiction reading passages.  Many teachers have wondered if I have more of these or an entire packet of non-fiction passages.  Well, I’m so happy to finally be able to say, “Yes!” I now have a collection of Seasonal Non-Fiction Reading Passages and each passage comes with a comprehension check.

What’s Included?

This Seasonal Non-Fiction Reading Passages with Comprehension Checks packet contains 109 high-interest informational texts on seasonal, science, and historical topics! Passages include fall, winter, spring, and summer topics. The included comprehension checks give students the opportunity to practice responding to the text using multiple-choice, text evidence (using crayons to highlight evidence in the text), flow charts, bubble maps, and written responses. Each topic contains a full one-page text and an accompanying full one-page comprehension check. Answer keys are also included.

Google Classroom Integration

Included are both print and digital versions. All texts and comprehension checks are also available as Google Slides. Students are able to read and respond to the texts digitally. Comprehension checks allow students to digitally answer multiple-choice, text evidence, flow chart, bubble map, and written response questions. The digital version would be perfect for digital integration in the classroom or Distance/Remote Learning. Answer keys are included in only the PDF version, so students will not have access to the answers digitally.

Skills Covered

The comprehension checks cover skills including: author’s purpose, main idea and key details, determining the meaning of words, text features, how specific images contribute to the text, describing how reasons support points the author makes in a text, describing connections between paragraphs in a text, using information from included illustrations to demonstrate an understanding of the text, and asking and answering questions such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate an understanding of key details in a text.

These passages would be great to use for reading informational texts, practicing comprehension skills, fluency, assessing students’ comprehension skills, test prep, small group instruction, RTI, literacy stations, independent reading, partner reading, and homework. Texts are written with Second and Third Graders in mind, which also makes them good for stretch texts for high-level First Graders or support material for below-level Fourth Graders.

Common Core Objectives covered in this unit are: RI.2.1, RI.2.2, RI.2.4, RI.2.5, RI.2.7, RI.2.8, RI.2.10, RI.3.1, RI.3.2, RI.3.3, RI.3.4, RI.3.7, RI.3.8, and RI.3.10
