Subtract to Compare Scoot Game: A Fun Way to Practice Subtraction Within 10!
Have you ever used a Scoot Game to practice math skills? If you haven’t, you’re in for a treat! Scoot Games are one of my favorite ways to get students engaged in math while practicing essential skills. I have used Scoot Games in a variety of ways such as: whole class review, Write the Room math centers, and small group activities. One of the first skills my students learn in First Grade are subtracting to compare word problems. To help my students practice this skill, I used this Subtract to Compare Scoot Game!
This Subtract to Compare Scoot Game activity is perfect for first grade students who are learning to compare amounts, find the difference, write subtraction number sentences, and solve real-world problems. Whether you’re looking for a whole group math review, a write-the-room activity, or something fresh for your math stations, this one will surely engage your students!
Why Use a Scoot Game to Practice Subtract to Compare Word Problems?
Scoot games turn practice problems into an exciting movement-based activity. Instead of sitting through worksheet after worksheet, your students will be up, moving, thinking, and subtracting to compare amounts in a meaningful way. These Subtract to Compare Scoot Game cards are designed to help students read a word problem, picture the quantities, and solve for the difference using subtraction within 10.
It’s also a great way to check for understanding! Since all students complete all cards, you can quickly spot who’s mastering the skill and who needs a little more support.
What You Need to Play the Subtract to Compare Scoot Game:
- A set of Subtract to Compare Scoot Cards (20 cards included!)
- A recording sheet for each student
- Pencils
This set includes both color and black-and-white versions of the task cards—perfect for printing options and saving ink!
How to Set Up the Subtract to Compare Scoot Game:
- Place one task card on each student desk or work area. Keep the cards in numerical order to make transitions smooth. You can also place cards around the carpet or classroom.
- Give each student a recording sheet and pencil.
- Choose your transition signal (I like to say “SCOOT!” but you can use a bell, chime, or clapping pattern).
- Review how to match the card number to the correct space on the recording sheet.
How to Play the Game:
Students begin by solving the subtracting word problem on the card at their seat.
They write the subtraction number sentence, find the difference, and record their answer in the matching spot.
After one minute, you call out “Scoot!” and students rotate to the next desk.
They leave the task card behind but take their pencil and recording sheet with them.
Play continues until all cards have been completed.
What Skills Are Students Practicing?
This game gives students plenty of practice with:
- Subtract to Compare word problems
- Subtraction within 10
- Writing subtraction number sentences
- Identifying and explaining how many more or how many fewer
- Solving subtraction problems with pictures and visuals
Teacher Tips for a Successful Scoot Game:
Let’s be honest—getting a room full of first graders up and moving every minute can feel a little wild. But I promise, with just a few management tips, Scoot becomes one of the smoothest (and most loved!) routines in your classroom.
✔️ Scoot is Silent!
Make this a hard and fast rule from the start. Students must move quietly and quickly. The silence helps keep everyone focused and ready to dive into the next card right away.
✔️ Set Clear Expectations
Practice moving from one seat to the next before playing. And make sure students understand where to record their answers (i.e., card #5 goes in box #5!).
✔️ Plan for Early Finishers
If students finish a card quickly, have them double-check their work or solve the problem a different way. You can also challenge students to write/create their own subtract to compare problems on the back of the recording sheet.
✔️ Review What to Do If They Don’t Finish
Let students know it’s okay if they don’t complete a card before it’s time to move. They can come back to it later or revisit it during math stations.
✔️ Make Scoot Work for You!
If your class isn’t ready for a full 20-card Scoot game, start with 10! Or break it into two days. This resource is flexible and can fit your students’ needs. You can also have students work in partners.
