Make Missing Addends Fun with a Missing Addends Scoot Game: Movement-Based Learning in First Grade Math

· · ·

Have you tried playing Scoot in your classroom yet? If not, you’re in for a treat—especially when it comes to reinforcing tricky math skills like missing addends to 10. Scoot is one of my all-time favorite ways to get students engaged, up and moving, and thinking critically—all while practicing important concepts. That’s why I’m so excited to share this Missing Addends Scoot Game with you. It combines everything teachers love: low prep, high engagement, and built-in flexibility for your math block.

Whether you’re working on whole-group review, small group instruction, or setting up your math stations, this resource gives students meaningful, hands-on practice on finding missing addends within 10 while using number bonds, part-part-whole maps, and number sentences.

Why Focus on Missing Addends?

Let’s face it—missing addends can be a confusing concept for young learners. It requires students to think backward, break numbers apart, and understand part-whole relationships. But when students get repeated practice in a fun and accessible way, it all starts to click.

This Missing Addends Scoot Game supports exactly that. By using visuals like number bonds and part-part-whole maps, this resource helps students build a concrete understanding of how numbers work together. And when you add in the movement and energy of a Scoot Game or Write the Room Math Center, students stay focused and excited the entire time.

What’s Included in the Missing Addends Scoot Game?

This math resource is packed with materials to give your students multiple ways to approach the same skill of finding missing addends within 10:

  • Number Bond Task Cards (Color + B&W)
  • Part-Part-Whole with Cubes (Color + B&W)
  • Part-Part-Whole Maps (Color + B&W)
  • Number Sentence Task Cards (Color + B&W)
  • Student Recording Sheets
  • Answer Keys
  • Teacher Instructions

You’ll love the fact that this game is differentiated with four unique versions of missing addends task cards. Use them for gradual release (model, guided, then independent), differentiation by level, or simply to revisit missing addends in different formats throughout the school year.

And yes, there’s a black-and-white version of every set to help you save ink—because we all know how valuable that printer toner is!

How to Play the Missing Addends Scoot Game

If you’re new to Scoot, don’t worry—it’s super easy to implement and your students will LOVE it. Here’s how I recommend setting up:

What You’ll Need:

  • A set of numbered task cards (one for each student – you can also partner up students)
  • A student recording sheet
  • Pencils and clipboards (especially for write the room versions)

Set-Up:

  1. Place one task card on each student’s desk (You can use carpet spots or spots around the room, too!) in numerical order.
  2. Hand each student a recording sheet and pencil.
  3. Explain that students will solve the problem at their desk, write the answer in the corresponding box, and then wait for the signal to “Scoot.”
  4. Use a consistent signal (like a chime or the word “Scoot!”) to let students know when to move to the next desk.
  5. Students continue rotating and solving until all cards are complete—or until time runs out!

Alternatively, you can tape cards around the room and use this as a Write the Room Math Center for independent work.

Tips for Managing Scoot Successfully

Here are a few classroom-tested tips for keeping Scoot stress-free:

  • Review the Rules First: Scoot is silent. Emphasize this up front to maintain focus.
  • Model the Rotation: Practice moving between seats or around the room before you begin.
  • Start Where You Are: Students should record answers starting at the number where they begin—not necessarily box #1. This avoids a lot of confusion.
  • Plan for Early Finishers: On the back of the recording sheet, challenge students to “Make your own missing addends problem” to keep everyone engaged while waiting to scoot to the next card.
